A Note From the Photographer

Hey there!

In case you are just getting to know me, here’s a lil’ bio and my backstory.

I was fortunate to grow up with nature at my backdoor. From an early age I was allowed to explore the woods, streams, rivers, and fields of rural Ohio. “Be back by dinner” was the expectation, but not always the case : ) It was an ideal situation to cultivate my imagination and love for nature.

My desire to learn and gain new knowledge and understanding of our planet led me to obtain an A.D. in Applied Sciences from Hocking Technical College in Fish and Wildlife Management (2002). Also, a B.A. from The Ohio State University in International Studies with a focus on Latin America (2006). I’m thankful for the past opportunities to travel/backpack/study/work abroad from northern Ontario’s Algonquin National Forest, to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, and points in between.

For over 15 years, starting in 2006, I worked with a non-profit primary care medical clinic in Columbus, Ohio. I helped there in various capacities ranging from Spanish Interpreter/Caseworker, Call Center Supervisor, Social Services Coordinator, Facilities/Maintenance Supervisor, to Staff Photographer, while establishing and managing the clinic’s 1/4-acre community garden.

I’d also like to highlight here two life events that have profoundly influenced me. 1. The birth of my child in April 2005. Becoming a father and having my kid remind me of all of life’s opportunities is an unbelievable joyfilled journey. Thanks Fifi!

2. In 2020, I found love and support from a dear friend that continually encouraged me to pursue photography professionally. That dear friend became my wife & partner n’ crime in the Summer of 2022. We also took a step towards uncertainty to becoming independently employed making visual art, trusting that every season has its turn. Thanks Ky!

Photography has been with me ever since I was a youth. I can remember stacks of old Nat Geo from my grandma’s basement, and lost weekends spent at the downtown Columbus library pouring over books by the classic Magnum photographers. To say photography has been a life long pursuit sounds cliche, but ask my wife about the boxes and boxes of prints & film negatives in our garage.

Highlighting the importance of clean water, sustainable agriculture, and the protection of our natural heritage, I’ve worked with The Nature Conservancy, Biohabitats, and American Farmland Trust to visually document environmental restoration projects throughout the United States.  My love of nature, thirst for knowledge, and desire to help continually guide me in my goals of creating imagery that will inspire, captivate, and emotionally connect people to their environment.

Thanks for taking the time to connect with my artwork. Please consider me for any potential collaborative efforts that need documentation regarding the importance of nature.

Much Love, David
